A fantastic short video that gives a wonderful insight into why we dance tango
This short documentary has been a long time in the planning, and a fair time in the making! If you don't dance tango and are bemused as to what all the fuss is about, perhaps this will help. If you already dance, and want to help your friends understand why it consumes so much of your life, try sharing this with them ... Filmmaker: Ben Lovejoy
Thank you so much Ben for allowing us to share your documentary.

*A Path to Deeper Connection
What if you embraced both roles? Could it transform your dancing?
Learning both roles in tango—leading and following—isn’t just about versatility on the dance floor; it’s a journey that deepens your connection to the dance itself.
When you embrace both roles, you start to appreciate the nuances and the intricate conversation that unfolds between partners. It’s not about being “better” at one role than the other; it’s about cultivating awareness, empathy, and a profound connection with your partner.
Practically speaking, this dual understanding opens up more opportunities to dance, enhances your comfort in social settings, and amplifies the joy you experience while dancing.
While it’s common for followers—often women—to explore the role of the leader, it’s equally beneficial for leaders to step into the follower’s shoes. Experiencing the sensation of receiving each movement enriches your understanding of leading and fosters a greater sensitivity to how your partner experiences the dance.
Remember, it’s not about permanently switching roles; it’s about expanding your awareness and deepening your connection through the beautiful art of tango.
We’ll leave you with this to ponder: What new understanding might unfold—about the dance, your partner, or yourself—if you stepped into the other role, even just for a while? If you’re ready to take the plunge, then the Beginners Class is the perfect place to explore, step in, and learn the ‘other role’
Classes are held every Tuesday except Melbourne Cup Day.

Monthly Friday night Practilonga
Social Practice Night
1st Friday of the month (excluding October & December)
7:30pm - 10pm
Dancing is a Journey of Discovery …
Our Practilonga is a welcoming space for dancers of all levels to explore, grow, and enjoy tango in a relaxed, social setting.
It’s a great opportunity to practice, fine-tune, and build confidence in your dancing while connecting with others who share your love of the dance.
Sometimes, we fall into the habit of repeating the same thing, hoping it will eventually feel better. But if something isn’t working quite as you’d hoped, take a moment to pause and try a gentle adjustment. Maybe there’s some tension in your body, or perhaps you’re moving a little too quickly, or slowly. Shift one element, then notice what changes. If it’s still not quite right, try another small adjustment. This process of tuning in and trying things out is where the real magic happens.
Before You Arrive: A Few Things to Keep in Mind
• Set an intention. Take a moment to think about what you’d like to explore. Choosing one or two areas to focus on can give your practice more depth and clarity.
• Open your ears—and your heart—to the music. This is a perfect time to experiment with unfamiliar songs. Let yourself be curious and playful as you discover how your body responds.
• Tune in to your technique. You might work on fully committing to each step in your walk, creating a more connected embrace, finding your balance, or releasing unnecessary tension. Try dancing with the music rather than just to it.
• Practice good milonga etiquette. It’s a small thing that makes a big difference in creating a warm and respectful community.
• Above all, enjoy yourself.
Come as you are, stay curious, and have fun exploring your dance.
Monthly Practilongas are held in Studio 49 (Main Hall)- Martha House, 466 Esplanade, Mount Martha
Cost: $15 per person
We’ll have coffee, tea and water available, and we invite you to bring your favourite drinks (and glasses), and if you are able, a little plate of something to share!
